Outgoing Kumbungu MP Ras Mubarak said President Akufo-Addo should rule out restriction of movement in the country as part of measures to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.
In an open letter to the president ahead of the 22nd national speech on Sunday, the politician acknowledged that although the country is witnessing a new outbreak of the disease, several citizens will not survive a second lockdown.
“The majority of our compatriots and women cannot afford to live in lockdown again. It will increase crime and destroy our society than the virus would.
“Certain categories of Ghanaians can afford to survive a lockdown, but many of our people across the country cannot,” he said.
For the former lawmaker, instead of a lockdown, the government and relevant stakeholders should focus on prevention by increasing public education and enforcing laws on wearing nasal masks and other protocols. health security.
He noted that due to flaws in the country’s systems, preventive measures will avoid pushing our structures “to the brink of collapse”.
To further flesh out his argument, the former MP cited the results of research by health scientists indicating that foreclosure policies “are having devastating effects” on people in particular, young people “on public health in the short. and long term ”.
“We are in the same boat, Mr. President. The virus does not know color, class or creed. I implore my fellow Ghanaians to respond to appeals to protect themselves, their loved ones and other Ghanaians.
