Jakarta has recorded a peak of dengue cases, with 613 new cases registered in almost a month, as the capital enters an extraordinary fever warning period.
A total of 430 cases were reported Tuesday last week and 183 new cases were recorded Sunday. No deaths have been reported.
Widyastuti, director of the Jakarta Health Agency, said Monday during a press briefing that, unlike in previous years, when cases were spread evenly, an outbreak of dengue cases occurred. 39, is produced in the southern districts of Jakarta, east and west.
"[As of Sunday] 231 cases were recorded in South Jakarta, 169 in East Jakarta and 153 in West Jakarta. In the meantime, 37 cases were reported north of Jakarta and 23 in central Jakarta, "she said, adding that no cases had been reported in the Thousand Islands Regency.
"The appearance of cases has not been distributed evenly. Five districts have the highest incident rate, "she added.
The five districts are Jagakarsa, south of Jakarta, where the incident rate is 19.27 per 100,000 population; Kalideres, West Jakarta, 16.94; Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, 16.54; and Pasar Rebo, 13.93, and Cipayung, 13.57, both east of Jakarta.
The agency announced a dengue alert period until March, prompting the city administration to take steps to prevent an outbreak in the capital.
The agency, in cooperation with the Meteorological and Climate Agency (BMKG), has developed a climate-based dengue risk prediction model, accessible via: dbd.bmkg.go.id.
Even though the city has about 30,000 inhabitants jumantik (mosquito larvae controllers) to control dengue vectors, Widyastuti pointed out that each household must have its own jumantik.
"Every member of the family must be a jumantik to ensure the house is free from jentik [mosquitos]," she says.
Last year, the Jakarta Health Agency registered 2,947 cases of dengue with two deaths, compared to 3,362 and one death in 2017.
The highest number of cases was recorded in 2016 with 20,432 cases and 14 deaths.
