Closed season extended in Elmina to “punish” fishermen who practice light fishing – Hawa Koomson

Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson said the ministry is extending the closed fishing season for fishermen in Elmina and also denying them pre-mixed fuel as punishment for their reluctance to give up fishing slight.

The fisheries minister said this on Saturday when the fishing season reopened for canoe and inshore fishermen at a ceremony in Sekondi in the Western region.

“At the end of today and tomorrow, all of the landing beaches will have pre-mixed fuel except Elmina because we don’t want them to go fishing.”

“We will deny them pre-mixed fuel. We will not give them the logistics they need from the government to go fishing for some time, ”the minister said.

Fishermen from Elmina and Cape Coast said a ban on light fishing would negatively affect their work.

They say that since the introduction of pair trawling in Ghanaian waters, they are unable to get enough fish without the use of light.

The minister said the restrictions will be lifted when there are signs of compliance from fishermen.

The 2021 season closure for fishing came into effect on July 1 for artisanal and semi-industrial fleets.

This is done annually to replenish depleted marine fish stocks.

The season closure was first observed in 2019.
