Closing by the United States: Trump irritated by the rejection of the "compromise" by the Democrats

US President Donald Trump has accused the Democrats of rejecting his proposals to end the longest government blockage in US history.

He added that his plans had been abandoned before he even presented them.

Mr. Trump had proposed "compromises" in exchange for funding for his security wall located along the Mexican border, which resulted in the closure.

But Democrats have called these proposals "unacceptable", "non-starter" and "hostage-taking". There were two main offers in a speech by Mr Trump on Saturday:

• Some 700,000 so-called dreamers, who were young when they entered the United States illegally with their parents, would be protected for three years.
• Some 300,000 visa holders enjoying temporary protection status would also benefit from a three-year protection. These are people who have fled from countries affected by war or disasters

What is Mr. Trump's last?

On Twitter, he said Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats "rejected my offer yesterday before I even spoke".

He said his opponents "do not see crime and drugs, they only see 2020 – what they are not going to win".

A second tweet appeared aimed at the conservative right, which fears that its offer of immigration is comparable to an amnesty.

He tweeted, "No. Amnesty is not part of my offer." He said that he was only talking about a three-year extension and that an amnesty "would only be used for a much larger market, whether in immigration or in something else".

Mr. Trump also stated that he did not plan to "go to great lengths to illegally evict more than 11 million people" in the United States, but also warned Ms. Pelosi to "pay attention" to this regard.

What did the Democrats say?

The target of Mr. Trump's anger was a statement released by Ms. Pelosiantant – and rejecting – the concessions before they were made.

She said the proposals were "baseless" and "a compilation of several previously-rejected initiatives, each of which is unacceptable and does not represent a total good faith effort to restore security in people's lives."

Senator Chuck Schumer said Trump had previously "withdrawn" the Dreamer and TPS protections and that some back-up protections were "not a compromise but a greater hostage-taking".

Democrats insist that they will not negotiate until the government reopens.

The party took control of the House this year, while Trump's Republicans still have a majority in the Senate. Funding from the federal budget should be accepted by both.

Polls suggest that most Americans blame Mr. Trump more than the Democrats for this closure.

How does closure affect unpaid workers?

Some of the 800,000 unpaid federal employees since December 22 are in an increasingly difficult situation as the fifth week closes.

They launched more than 1,500 calls to the crowdfunding site GoFundMe, seeking a financial lifeline to pay rent or feed and clothe their children.
