The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is working with COCOBOD and approved cocoa purchasing companies (LCB) to limit the purchase of cocoa beans harvested from forest reserves.
The goal is to dissuade farmers from illegally turning their forest reserves into cocoa plantations, a practice that has caused mbadive degradation of the country's forest reserves.
Mr. Obed Owusu-Addai, campaign manager, Cocoa Ghana, said this information at a meeting with cocoa farmers in Nyinahin, in the district of Atwima-Mponua.
He added that the LBC, which had joined the initiative, would stop the purchase of such cocoa beans as of December 31 this year.
"The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Land and Natural Resources and LBC, is committed to working together to end forest degradation in the cocoa value chain" added Owusu-Addai.
He said the common framework was aimed at promoting forest restoration and reducing farmers' activities in natural forest reserves.
The government also planned to sign a contract with farmers to include a benefit-sharing agreement for trees for the forest reserve restoration and reforestation program.
The objective is to ensure the gradual and efficient restoration of the forest to its initial state of health and biodiversity.
