The Coalition of National Election Observers (CODEO) calls on Inspector General of Police (IGP) James Oppong Boanuh to provide Ghanaians with updates on investigations into election-related violence that occurred during of the 2020 electoral cycle.
This was one of the main recommendations of a post-election report released by the Election Observer Group in accordance with its mandate to assess the general post-election environment.
Produced by CODEO post-election observers, the report was based on 30 constituencies that featured strongly during the election, especially due to questionable results and other election-related violence.
Although the group reported a generally stable electoral atmosphere, it did note some incidents of unrest following street protests across the country by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) which has leads to the election petition hearing in progress .
CODEO therefore recommended that, in the interests of transparency, the management of the police service informs the public of the results of investigations into pockets of violence recorded after the elections.
“As in previous cases of electoral violence recorded during voter registration and in accordance with public accountability, CODEO requests the Inspector General of Police and the Ghanaian Police Service to inform the public of the status progress of investigations on all elections. – the related violence recorded during the elections and during the post-election period ”, notes the observation statement.
Questions relating to the election petition
For CODEO, it is imperative that all stakeholders, the media and the public be cautious in their general discussions on the current hearings so as not to compromise the legitimate processes of the Court.
“CODEO congratulates all candidates who challenge the election results in the courts and further urges all candidates, political parties and their supporters to cooperate with the courts to determine the merits or not of election petitions,” he said. he adds.
Some constituencies which have been attached to the report as post-election observation areas are Odododoido, Ablekuma Central, Sene West, Techiman South, Awutu Senya West, Hohoe, Savelugu among others.
Meanwhile, CODEO says it is continuing its observation of the post-election environment and will duly share its
results with the public if necessary.
