WASHINGTON – Hundreds of colorectal cancer survivors in Washington share their stories with congressional staff and advocate for change.
All this to help people who are fighting the disease.
Today, survivors have called on Congress to end a loophole in the public health system that could leave patients with the bill for cancer screening.
They are also asking legislators to spend more money on cancer research.
According to estimates, this type of cancer will take the lives of more than 50,000 Americans this year.
"He's beaten 16 months before his death, while our son was 14 months old," says Kristina Smith, wife of a cancer victim.
"That can be more than $ 600 and for Medicare patients, this surprise can be a barrier to cancer screening," said Anjee Davis.
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States and diagnoses continue to increase.
