White filmmaker Craig Brewer opened up about why he chose to tell black people stories, including his recently released Amazon Prime movie Coming 2 America.
Filmmaker Craig Brewer recently spoke about being a white man who chooses to tell black stories in his films, including the recent Coming 2 America movie.
“I don’t want to be at odds with the struggle of many African American filmmakers,” Brewer told IndieWire. “But that’s only Dolemite is my name that I asked myself, “Do I feel bad about doing this?” Until then, I felt pretty good, ”he added.
Brewer clarified that his decision to tell black stories came in part from his inspiration in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee – a predominantly African-American city – and cited the late director John Singleton as a “major mentor.”

“There is something about the music that I grew up on,” said the director. “There is something in films that I have always responded to. And there was something in the ’80s to’ 90s, where there was an appeal to blackness that didn’t make it seem like white appreciation was unwelcome. I couldn’t help it. “
Brewer added, however, that he began to seriously consider whether to tell black stories when he was directing the Eddie Murphy-directed film. Dolemite is my name. He finally decided he was a good fit for the job. “I have to be very honest with myself about why I want to make the movie,” he explained. “For me, Dolemite it was very easy because I lived this life. I know what it’s like to get a motley bunch of people together to make a movie – to come from the South to Hollywood and then make a career. “
He added, “I just have to be right with my soul. Listen and surround me with as many people as possible. Train as many people as possible around me. And if I ever do something wrong, I hope. that people can tell me. “
Prior to Coming 2 America, Brewer told black-centric stories like The Poor and Hungry, Hustle & Flow and Dolemite is my name. He was also co-executive producer on Fox’s Empire, with Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson. His upcoming projects include a film about the late country singer Charley Pride and a series on Memphis’ Stax Records.
