Accra, April 25, GNA – A memorial service
detained in Israel for the late Major-General Francis Vib-Sanziri, head of the
United Nations Force Mission and Force Commander in charge of observing clearance
(UNDOF).
Maj Gen Vib-Sanziri was appointed by the
Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, in October 2017, at the head of
Multinational force.
He was the former director general of the
National Disaster Management Organization 2015 to 2017. Maj Gen
Vib-Sanziri, at the age of 62, died suddenly on Friday, April 19, 2019 in Eilat.
Israel.
A statement addressed to the Ghana News Agency by
Aviation Captain Elizabeth Fadilatu Salifu, Press Secretary and Information Officer
UNIFIL GHANBATT 85 said, the solemn ceremony that took place at Ziouani camp was
Hannah Ama Nyarko, Ghana's ambbadador to Israel, and other personalities
Ambbadadors from Nigeria, Zambia, Rwanda and Nepal, among other diplomats.
In her remarks, the ambbadador of Ghana to Israel
representing the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,
praised the virtues of fire the general who was very professional and
dedicated to duty.
President Akufo-Addo in a message of condolences
his death, noted that Ghana had lost "a fine, dedicated, professional
military officer, who served his country and the world community with
distinction.
A 25-member delegation from Ghana Battalion 85
under the direction of the Contingent Commander, Colonel John Lawluvi and
Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Fiifi Deegbe, serving in the United Nations Interim Mission.
The Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) took an essential part in the ceremony held in Israel.
The body of the late Major General Francis
Vib-Sanziri, draped under the flag of the United Nations, received the honors of the last post,
followed by two minutes of silence and waking.
There was also a wreath laying ceremony where
Nyarko, Ghana's ambbadador to Israel, laid a wreath on behalf of the president
Government and people of Ghana.
Other key figures at the ceremony also
deposited wreaths for the commander of the deceased force.
Other dignitaries at the memorial service
including Major General Cheryl Pearce, commander of the force of the
United Nations Peacekeeping in Cyprus (UNFICYP), a delegation from the United Kingdom
United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), senior United Nations civilian and military officials
staff, representatives of the Israel Defense Forces and others in mourning
Israel and Syria.
A similar memorial service will be held on
Friday, April 25, 2019 at Camp Faouar in the Syrian Arab Republic. The body of the
The late general should arrive in Ghana on Saturday, April 27, 2019 for a new
funeral rites.
