Fifteen patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer were treated with CVA21, a natural cold-causing virus, with impressive results.
Patients received CVA21, a strain of Coxsackie virus, directly into their bladders via a catheter a week before surgery. When the researchers examined tissue samples after surgery, they found that the virus only infected cancer cells and left healthy tissue alone. In addition, urine samples indicated that the virus was continuing to replicate and attack more cancer cells.
One patient had no trace of cancer, just one week after receiving the treatment.
Researchers at the University of Surrey in England have stated that the Coxsackie virus could "revolutionize the treatment" of non-invasive bladder cancer on the muscle, which affects about 40,000 Americans each year. Current treatment for high prevalence disease is not effective, highly invasive and toxic for a number of patients.
Viral treatment did not cause any serious toxicity in patients; In all patients, a reduction in tumor burden and increased mortality of cancer cells was observed.
Long-term follow-up of patients treated with the virus will be necessary, in addition to validating the results through a larger trial. The results of the current trial have recently been published in Clinical research on cancer.
