Commonwealth and Malta to open new office to strengthen the voluntary sector

A new agreement between the Commonwealth and the Government of Malta will encourage the sharing of knowledge and solutions to strengthen the voluntary sector in member countries.

Under-Secretary-General Arjoon Suddhoo and Maltese Voluntary Sector Council President Noel Camilleri signed a memorandum of understanding at today's meeting. The Memorandum of Understanding sets out the principles of cooperation between the two parties.

As part of this agreement, the MCVS will establish an international office to be operational on 2 July 2019. This office will serve as a point of contact between European countries and Commonwealth countries for the sharing of best practices, the creation of partnerships and promoting networking opportunities.

The Deputy Secretary-General said: "The International Volunteer Desk is an important initiative for the exchange of useful information between various country families. It will provide new streams of information that we can badyze and share to strengthen the voluntary sector and volunteer work. "

Other areas of cooperation include capacity building through training programs; cutting-edge research on the voluntary sector; facilitate access to funds, grants and partnerships; and badist national voluntary organizations in developing their strategies and reforms.

After the meeting, Clifton Grima, Malta's Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Sport and Voluntary Organizations, said: "Malta is very pleased to have gained the necessary experience in the voluntary sector, which allows us to help other countries to achieve the highest level of excellence.

"The signing of this agreement fosters closer collaboration through which we can ensure that our people are aware of the opportunities and opportunities that come with strengthening our voluntary sector.

"Both parties are committed to this protocol being actively implemented. I look forward to meeting with our Commonwealth colleagues to see the progress that will be made through this important collaboration. "
