'Companion' jailed for stealing 500 sales to cover the needs of a pregnant woman

A bus driver (companion driver) who escaped from his captain's daily sales to support his pregnant wife was sentenced to one month in prison by a district court in Accra.

Emmanuel Kwame Asare pleaded guilty to theft charge.

The Prosecution had told the Court that Asare was working for Oppong as the driver's second on the Lapaz-Circle road and was living with him at Avenor in Accra.

The prosecution stated that on December 23, 2018, after the completion of the work, Asare had asked to be excused to answer the call of nature and had disappeared with a 500.00 ¢ transportation product.

According to the Prosecution, Oppong waited but Asare never appeared. He therefore complained to the Old Fadama Police Station, where Asare was later arrested on December 30.

The prosecution said that Asare had been released on bail from a police investigation, while he had promised to work to repay the money, but that he had failed he was subsequently charged.
