Young people from Odododiodoo, one of the three constituencies that make up the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in the Greater Accra region, are protesting against the alleged impeachment of the current mayor of Accra.
This follows reports that Mohammed Nii Agyei Sowah will be replaced by Elizabeth Sackey, the former deputy minister of the Greater Accra region in the soon to be announced MMDCE list.
“As a group, our interest is not to question or downplay the skills of other contenders for this competition, but it’s just who and what they bring to the table. We do not look forward to an armchair or mayor who will be a puppet and succumb to the whims and whims of some former selfish party members in the Greater Accra region.
“We want a leader who will listen and appeal to all kinds of people, regardless of party color,” read a statement released by the group and seen by JoyNews.
On Thursday, Presidential Communications Director Eugene Arhin announced that President Akufo-Addo had submitted the list of appointed Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors General (MMDCEs) to the Minister of Local Government and Regional Reorganization, Dan Botwe.
The information has led to speculation that some 37 women should be on the list.
Notable people like Elizabeth Sackey and Catherine Reckling, the general manager of the Sekyere South district in the Ashanti region are said to be on the list.
But reacting to the rumors, the concerned youth of Odododiodoo argued that the current mayor of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly would best fit the portfolio and could serve the vision of the President of Accra and that of the people.
According to them, this claim is based on the successes achieved by Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah over the years.
“As a true base and loyalist of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition, Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah delivered Greater Accra against all odds by winning 21 seats as regional secretary in the 2016 elections. A portfolio he had held for two consecutive terms. His appointment and the fact that he received 100% confirmation on March 24, 2017 did not come by chance.
“Adjei Sowah has always given priority to sanitation which has long been a problem in Accra, at the crossroads of public safety, public health, the informal economy (which employs around 75% of the inhabitants of Accra) and emissions contributing to climate change. He has constantly emphasized the inclusiveness and fairness that remain his core business.
Again, under the auspices of Mohammed Nii Adjei, the three constituencies under the Accra Metropolitan Assembly can now boast of having newly constructed constituency offices that have been commissioned and are currently being used in improving operations. of the NPP.
“The rental periods for constituency offices in these three constituencies are now a thing of the past.
“We greatly admire the tactful contributions to the 2020 election which just ended. Despite his poor health during this period, he never gave up sitting at the table to strategize and lead the way during the election period. Indeed, Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah is a masterpiece and we are lucky to have it, ”said the group.
Meanwhile, NPP leaders urge members to remain calm and respect President Akufo-Addo’s candidates.
At a press conference in Accra on Friday, September 17, 2021, the nuclear power plant’s communications director, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, accepted that not everyone will nominate their preferred candidate, but asked members to salute the president’s decision. .
“We urge everyone to remain calm and act in such a way as to promote good relations at the labor level in order to give the candidates the best possible opportunity to work in the interest of the base of the nation,” he said. he declares.
