Confirmed cases of Covid-19 in South Africa stand at 2,624,254

  • South Africa has registered 10,685 new confirmed cases of Covid-19.
  • Another 553 deaths linked to Covid-19 have been reported, bringing the total number of deaths to 77,993.
  • The majority of Tuesday’s new cases are from the Western Cape.

South Africa recorded 10,685 new confirmed cases of Covid-19, bringing the total to 2,624,254 on Tuesday, according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD).

This increase in confirmed cases represents a positivity rate of 20.4%.

“According to the national health ministry, another 553 deaths linked to Covid-19 have been reported, bringing the total number of deaths to 77,993 so far,” NICD spokesman Sinenhlanhla Jimoh said.

As of Tuesday, Gauteng had registered 889,748 confirmed cases, the Western Cape 446,751 and KwaZulu-Natal 432,747.

Jimoh added that the majority of new cases were from the Western Cape (26%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (21%).

The Eastern Cape accounted for 17%, Gauteng 11%, North West 5% and Limpopo 2%, while the Free State, Mpumalanga and Northern Cape accounted for 6% each.

The Western Cape recorded 2,745 cases, KwaZulu-Natal 2,288 and the Eastern Cape 1,831.

Hospital admissions increased to 526 in the past 24 hours.

The country had administered 9,753,138 vaccines, according to the Ministry of Health.

“The cumulative number of recoveries now stands at 2,393,133, with a recovery rate of 91.2%,” he added.

A total of 15,685,889 Covid-19 tests were performed and there were 2,393,133 recoveries
