Agents of the National Investigation Bureau (BNI) arrested a middle-aged officer of the northeastern branch of the National Health Insurance Scheme for transporting ammunition to Chereponi, the area affected by the conflict after a peace agreement.
The arrest occurred around 6 pm on Sunday night, after being notified.
The culprit, Mohammed Dueshi, allegedly concealed ten rounds of ammunition under goods loaded in a metropolitan transit vehicle bound for Chereponi from Tamale.
The confiscated items were allegedly escorted by the police, but the police officer was blocked when BNI agents stopped to search the bus bearing the GR 2026 U registration number.
"We received information about contraband goods being transported to the conflict zone, so we had to act quickly to jump on the bus," said a member of the BNI agents.
The tension and clashes between the Kokomba and Chokosi tribes in Saboba District persisted for years on a plot of land.
Two weeks ago, a high-level delegation of representatives of ethnic parties and organizations led by Defense Minister Dominic Nitiwul was in the district to ensure peace between the warring factions.
But the circumstances that led to the arrest of Mohammed Dueshi are the sign of an agenda concealed by the two tribes.
As a result, a 16-hour curfew at 6 am has been imposed on the region as stakeholders try to find a lasting solution to the protracted conflict.
Nor is it the first time that a metropolitan bus is involved in the transport of such vehicles.
In January, a Jonkheere VDL subway mbad transit bus to Kpasa in the new Oti region was intercepted by police in Nkwanta in order to confiscate firearms and ammunition without a license.
The bus driver lost his job and the owner of the weapons was apprehended.
