Guy Brice Parfait Kolelas, one of Congo-Brazzaville’s main presidential contenders, died Sunday after falling seriously ill with Covid-19.

His campaign manager told AFP news agency that Mr. Kolelas “died in the medical plane that picked him up from Brazzaville on Sunday afternoon”.

The 61-year-old man tested positive for coronavirus on Friday, the last day of election campaigns.

He was diabetic and was one of six candidates vying for 77-year-old President Sassou Nguesso.

Sunday’s election went smoothly and with low turnout, observers said.

A day before the election, Mr Kolelas was filmed looking weak and wearing an oxygen mask, but encouraging voters to go and vote.

He was the son of a former Prime Minister and previously served as Minister of Fisheries and Civil Servants.

The electoral law does not annul the election if one of the candidates dies.
