NEW HAVEN, Conn.

Scientists in Connecticut launch a new effort to track and monitor ticks.

The Hartford Courant reports that the state's agricultural experiment station is trying to trap ticks for testing at 40 sites in the 8 counties. The federal disease control centers pay $ 96,000 for the surveillance effort.

Theodore Andreadis, director of the New Haven-based station, said the initiative would help authorities better control existing and emerging tick-borne diseases.

He said that this year's tick season should be bad because winter was not rigorous enough to overthrow the population.

Ticks are the main transmitter of Lyme disease, so named in the city of Lyme, Connecticut. The disease continues to be the most widespread tick-borne disease in Connecticut, but ticks can also transmit other diseases.
