Justin Gaethje's first-round knockout victory over Edson Barboza earlier in the evening (Saturday, March 30, 2019) at UFC on ESPN 2 from inside the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, impressed the MMA community in general. Fighting fans were delighted to see the planned end of the showdowns in fireworks and other fighters were amazed by the dominant performance of "Highlight".
Although no longer a Gaethje fighter at UFC, Conor McGregor, who has just retired, was one of those who benefited from Gaethje's glamorous fallout on Barboza. "Notorious" was sent to Twitter after the closing of the ESPN main event to convey the following message:
This has been done well throughout.
Congratulations Justin.– Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) March 31, 2019
"It has been well done all along," McGregor wrote. "Congratulations Justin."
With his career at the UFC now on the ice, McGregor has a little more free time to talk about significant MMA events and even cast a shadow over Mark Wahlberg. It's good to see "Notorious" pay homage to his place. Gaethje was absolutely amazing tonight after playing another first-round match against the talented James Vick last August.
Given the type of performance that Gaethje continues to offer, it would have been fun to see "Highlight" and McGregor face off inside the Octagon. It was a confrontation that could have happened in the future if McGregor had not decided to quit earlier this week.
Another impressive victory for Gaethje could put him in a potential shot, which could mean a clash with McGregor's biggest rival, current UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
I wonder what McGregor would have to say about this.
