A large majority of 92.6% of Ghanaians who voted in favor of a 1992 draft constitution in the April 28, 1992 referendum undoubtedly endorsed Ghanaians’ readiness to constitutional democracy.
During activities to mark the annual celebration of Constitutional Week 2021, Reverend Vincent Adzika, NCCE City Manager for Akatsi South, reminded citizens that 28 years of stable constitutional democratic governance is not the time to become citizens. passive.
He commented with reference to the President’s inaugural address in 2017, “Be citizens, not spectators”, that citizen participation is essential for any democracy to prosper.
This was evident from the results of the 1992 referendum 29 years ago and the subsequent work of the NCCE which gave birth to Ghana’s oldest constitution, the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.
NCCE staff member Ruben Dey urged participants to uphold and defend the 1992 constitution at all times and urge them to adopt constitutional means to resolve conflict situations rather than take justice into their own hands. .
Management has launched a series of activities under the theme: We are one, Ghana first, to commemorate the weeklong celebration; among them are Durbar students from Wlitey JHS and Kingship Knowledge Academy, radio programs and engagements with identifiable groups.
The annual Constitution Week was established in 2001 to commemorate the Fourth Republic and the date on which the people of Ghana, by referendum, accepted the Fourth Republican Constitution of Ghana.
The “week” is observed annually from April 28 to May 4.
