Eating more than one egg a day increases the risk of heart attack or stroke because they are filled with cholesterol.
A new 31-year study of 30,000 adult Americans found that for every egg over one-and-a-half times a day, the risk of cardiovascular disease was 17% higher.
Professor Katherine Tucker, of the University of Mbadachusetts Lowell, said, "Even for people with a healthy diet, the detrimental effects of increased egg and cholesterol consumption were consistent."
She added that although eggs contain beneficial nutrients, I recommend that people avoid eating three-egg omelettes every day.
"Nutrition is a matter of moderation and balance. This is a solid study because the modeling has been adjusted according to factors such as the quality of the diet."
Eggs, especially yellow, are a major source of dietary cholesterol: a large 50 g egg contains about 186 mg of cholesterol.
