Sergio Ramos celebrates after scoring for Real Madrid against Girona
Real Madrid held a late rally to beat Girona 4-2 in their first leg of the Copa del Rey quarter-final on Thursday, thanks to goals from Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema in the space of three minutes.
Without victory in nine games in all competitions, Girona took advantage with Anthony Lozano in the seventh minute, but Real regained control after Lucas Vazquez equalized 11 minutes later.
Ramos then converted a Panenka style penalty three minutes before the break, following a fault of Vinicius Junior in the penalty area.
In the second half, Girona returned with a penalty, converted by captain Alex Granell in the 66th minute, following a handball of Real Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente, who came into play a few minutes ago.
Ramos came to the rescue shortly after, scoring with a header in the top corner after a Marcelo center for his 102nd career goal. Benzema increased the lead in the 80th minute with a close touch after a low center of Vinicius Junior.
This victory increases the chances of the Santiago Solari team to reach the last four places of the Copa del Rey for the first time since its victory in 2014.
Elsewhere Thursday, Real Betis scored late to draw 1-1 in the quarter-finals go with Espanyol in Barcelona.
It was an open match from the start at the CRED Stadium, with the two goalkeepers having to make several difficult saves, and Borja Iglesias gave the advantage to his team in the 27th minute.
In the 63rd minute, Betis' goal was denied for offside. Antonio Sanabria equalized following a quick counterattack with nine minutes to play.
