Covid-19 is exploding in Africa with a record average number of new cases according to an AFP tally based on official sources Tuesday at 6.15 p.m. GMT.
He said 6,009,854 cases have been officially counted in the 54 countries and territories of Africa since the discovery of the virus in December 2019 in China.
The number of new cases is rising to more than 41,400 per day – a 13% increase from last week and a rate never seen on the continent.
The number of confirmed cases reflects only a fraction of the actual number of infections, with different countries also having varying counting practices and testing levels. Lack of testing capacity can mean statistics are underestimated.
The number of new infections has been on the rise in Africa since mid-May.
Libya has experienced the fastest growth with 1,560 new cases daily, a jump of 260%.
Mozambique is second with an average of 1,380 new cases, an increase of 77%, and Morocco with 1,190 new cases, a jump of 70%.
In terms of the total number of new cases detected, South Africa is the most affected country with 2,219,316 cases. It represents 45% of new cases recorded on the continent every day.
However, the number of new daily cases in South Africa has declined in recent days, down 6% to 18,340 average daily cases.
The country reached its peak between July 2 and 8 when a daily average of 19,956 cases were reported.
After South Africa, Tunisia is the second country with the most new cases with 7,820 cases per day on average, an increase of 47%.
The Delta variant being very present in the country, the World Health Organization told AFP that “the health situation is serious and all indicators are in the red”.
In general, Africa suffers from an uneven distribution of vaccines across the world. Per 100 inhabitants, only about 4 doses were administered across the continent while in Europe, nearly 72 were administered according to an AFP count based on official sources.
Globally, the pandemic is only declining in Latin America and the Caribbean, where contamination is down 7% compared to last week.
In Europe, new cases have increased by 25%, 22% in the Middle East, 17% in Asia and 97% in the United States.
