National Democratic Congress parliamentary group leader Haruna Iddrisu urged Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng to pay particular attention to corrupt leaders of public institutions as well as politicians.
According to him, while the holders of political mandates have borne the brunt of investigations and prosecutions for corruption, heads of public institutions have largely escaped unscathed.
“CEOs and CEOs are left as if they don’t [engage in corruption]. Some of them do, and there is evidence. The focus shouldn’t be just on petty corruption where you see a police officer arresting a trot driver, ”the minority leader told parliament on July 30, before the House approved Kissi Agyebeng in as a special prosecutor.
Meanwhile, Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu called for a review of laws governing the special prosecutor’s office to empower the special prosecutor to carry out his mandate.
He said it was to prevent the special prosecutor from becoming a “toothless bulldog that can only bark but will not be able to bite.”
The House approved Mr Agyebeng on Friday after a report from the parliamentary appointments committee recommended the same.
“The committee duly recommended the candidate of the President for the appointment of the Special Prosecutor in accordance with Article 13 (3) and (8) of the Special Prosecutor Act 2017 and the Rules of Parliament and recommends the candidate Mr. Kissi Agyebeng to the House for approval.
After being sworn in by President Akufo-Addo, the 43-year-old succeeds Martin Amidu, the first special prosecutor.
