Council Statement on Recent Disturbances on UEW Campuses in Winneba

The board of directors of the University of Education said it would do everything possible to "restore calm and normalcy on campus as quickly as possible."

The statement that was issued Sunday and signed by the President of the Council also called "all to remain on appeal."

The Council statement then a stalemate between the students and the vice-chancellor, the Reverend p. Professor Anthony Afful-Broni on the dismissal of three speakers.

The confrontation that escalated into violent protests saw students breaking windows, glbad doors to buildings, Richard Kwadwo Nyarko of Joy News said he burned tires and clashed with the police.

In the ensuing melee, the Regional Security Council announced Thursday the closure of the university.

The board of directors of the University of Education, Winneba, has noted with concern recent events on its campuses, particularly with regard to agitations leading to violence in terms of life and property. The university is currently badessing the damage done and will issue a detailed press release to address the issues, including the misinformation that has taken over the airwaves.

The University agrees to respect the direction of the Regional Minister, President of REGSEC, to close the campuses of the University of Winneba and Ajumako until further notice. Early next week, when the Council meets, the details of the way forward for the University will be communicated to the academic community and the general public.

Through this publication, we are all calling for calm and baduring the nation that we will do everything in our power to restore calm and normalcy on campus as soon as possible.
