The captain of Esbad, Ryan ten Doeschate, scored a magnificent 130 to give his team a first lead in the third day against champion Surrey at The Oval.
He hit six and 20 in his 226-ball heats after Dan Lawrence fell to 93 in the morning session.
Liam Plunkett eventually trapped lbw with a slightly low performance while Esbad was at 448 points, 53 points ahead.
Surrey wiped out the deficit while Rory Burns and Mark Stoneman led them to 68-0 in the stumps, the 34 players having not been eliminated.
Unless there is a spectacular collapse, Esbad is unlikely to win the match with the same result as last season.
But the visitors knew that they had to fight well after taking over 202-4 and it is ten Doeschate who took the challenge with sure shots.
Robbie White provided helpful support to the support, but after he left, they went from 351-5 to 385-8 and it's undefeated from Peter Siddle who led them to a maximum of punch points.
Esbad's quest for first wickets at the start of the second innings of Surrey proved unsuccessful as the two left-handers, Burns and Stoneman, survived the last 27 holes of the match.
