Following the recent overthrow of President Alpha Condé by Colonel Mammady Doumbouya, many comments and analyzes have been made, either to condemn or to justify the need for the overthrow.
Adding his voice, the former chief of staff of the Ghanaian army, the brigadier. General (retired) Nunoo-Mensah described the coup as resulting from the conduct of President Alpha Condé.
According to the sergeant. General (rtd.) Nunoo-Mensah, “Most African leaders have learned nothing from the history of uprisings and coups on the continent”.
He described African leaders as plunging young people into utter despair as, at the slightest opportunity, they would jump on anything for food.
For him, the black political leader only does things for his own benefit without taking into account the interests of those who elected him to power. He noted that when this happens, “citizens will eventually tire of the lack of concern and this is what leads to coups; desperation among the population, ”he said.
He instructed political leaders to go beyond seeking their personal interests and focusing on economic theories, to properly institute structures that benefit all citizens.
The coup in Guinea is the latest military takeover by a democratically elected government in Africa. Seizing power from President Alpha Condé, General Mammady, in his first speech, cited the abuse of power and the desperation of the people as the reasons for the coup.
To the surprise and dismay of many, including the international community, the young people of the capital; Conakry, took to the streets to rejoice after the announcement of the coup. This sent indications that the majority were unhappy with the situation in the country, in particular the extension of Alpha Condé’s tenure by one more term, through a manipulative amendment to the Guinean constitution.
Brig. General (rtd.) Nunoo-Mensah’s assertion is one of many assertions by well-meaning Africans about the real situation of citizens on the continent and the harvest of government leaders.
