The Tokyo District Court has allowed investigators to detain former Nissan Motor president Carlos Ghosn for an additional eight days to investigate his allegations of financial misconduct.

The court ruled on Friday that a special team from the Tokyo District Attorney's Office, which was investigating Ghosn, could keep it until April 22nd.

Ghosn was arrested on April 4 for the fourth time on suspicion of hijacking Nissan funds sent to the automaker's dealership in Oman at a shell company that he actually owns.

The initial detention of Ghosn is due to expire Sunday and the team had requested a maximum extension of 10 days.

Detention can be extended if a case involves many people or if investigators have difficulty gathering evidence because a suspect refuses to speak.

Courts sometimes grant shorter time limits than those requested by prosecutors.

However, according to some sources, it is rare that a court does not grant a full extension in a case investigated by a special team of prosecutors.
