A high court in Accra rejected a petition filed by the lawyers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National President, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, who was trying to put his trial on hold.

Judge Samuel Asiedu found that the complaint was unfounded, as it does not raise any exceptional circumstances justifying the stay of the trial.

Mr. Ampofo's lawyers had previously filed an application with the court to eliminate the charge of badault against him. The court rejected this request.

His lawyers are currently seeking to overturn this decision in the Court of Appeal.

The lead counsel, Tony Lithur, asked the court to suspend the proceedings pending the decision of the appeal.

Prosecutors, however, objected to the petition, insisting that nothing prevented the court from proceeding to trial, as the Court of Appeal did not respond to the petition.

Judge Asiedu rejected the request for adjournment of the proceedings to 17 October, for the state to call its first witness

Mr. Ofosu Ampofo is on trial for conspiracy to badault a public officer and conspiracy to cause harm after it was secretly recorded, which would expose plans to cause chaos.

At the same time, the NDC president was arrested by the police after failing to honor an invitation to report to the Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The aim was to help him investigate the recent wave of kidnappings and arson in the country.

According to the correspondence that invited him, a suspect accused him of being behind the kidnappings in the country, which prompted the police to invite him to participate in their investigations.

But the president declined the invitation. His lawyers called the invitation "political harbadment" and "intimidation".
