An Accra circuit court granted a 50,000 ¢ bond with two sureties to a peddler for alleged theft.
The court ruled that sureties must be residents within the jurisdiction of the court, be in paid employment and earn at least 1,000 ¢ per month.
Emmanuel Anim Barimah, accused of conspiracy to commit a crime, theft and unlawful harm, has however pleaded not guilty.
He is therefore expected to reappear in court on January 25, 2021.
Meanwhile, two of his accomplices; Richard Ajunwa and Emmanuel Ajunwa, all of the chief porters are currently on the run.
Chief Inspector of Police William Kwadwo Boateng told the court presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah that Yaw Debrah is the plaintiff in the case and a trader living in Agbobloshie.
He said Barimah and his accomplices also lived in Kantamanto in Accra.
Chief Inspector Boateng recounted that on August 24, 2020, at around 3:30 a.m., Barimah, who is a friend of Debrah’s, went to his home while he (the complainant) was sleeping.
The prosecution said Barimah, along with two other people, namely Richard and Emmanuel, subsequently attacked the complainant who was sleeping in his room with one Francis Owusu, a witness in the case, and seized his goods valued at GH ¢ 3,540.
He said Barimah, who was holding a pair of scissors, also stabbed the complainant on several occasions, resulting in deep cuts to his head and abrasions all over his body.
The prosecution said Barimah and the two bolted themselves with the goods in addition to GH ¢ 1,500.00.
Chief Inspector Boateng said the complainant made an official report to the police on the same day, leading to Barimah’s arrest from his hiding place.
The prosecution said in its cautionary statement that Barimah admitted the offense but failed to lead the police to recover the items.
