The High Court in Accra ordered a psychiatric examination of Daniel Asiedu, the man who allegedly killed the MP of Abuakwa North, Mr J.B. Danquah-Adu.
The order followed a prayer by Asiedu's lawyer, Augustine Obour, who claimed that his client was not sane because of his interactions with him.
He therefore asked the court to order a psychiatric examination to determine Asiedu's mental capacity to stand trial. "My client can call me and tell me that he will become a chef in an Akuapem town, so he wants me to come and serve the guests with food," he said. .
The lawyer also mentioned Asiedu's insistence on a lawyer at the International Criminal Court (ICC) as another example of why he thought he should conduct a mental examination.
In response, prosecutor Sefakor Batse, Attorney General, disagreed with counsel and urged the court to continue the trial. She argued that Asiedu had not presented anything exceptional in court to warrant a psychiatric examination.
She also claimed that it was too early in the trial to conduct such a psychiatric examination.
In his ruling, however, Judge George Buadi, president of the court, upheld the application and ordered Asiedu's psychiatric examination.
He felt that Asiedu's attitude, such as his insistence on an ICC attorney, demonstrated the need for a psychiatric examination. "I am not sure that A1 (Daniel Asiedu) is in a good state of mind to appear in court or to plead charges without scientific review," he said.
