Court rejects appeal to stop operations in Genkai

A Japanese high court rejected the offer of local residents to shut down the activities of two reactors at the Genkai Nuclear Power Plant in southwestern Japan.

The Fukuoka High Court issued its decision on Wednesday.

Residents of Saga Prefecture had filed an injunction claim, saying the operator had underestimated the possible impact of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions on reactors # 3 and # 4 at the plant.

The appeal was filed after a lower court dismissed their petition in 2017.

The Kyushu Electric Power Company maintains that it has calculated the size of the tremors and determined that it was highly unlikely that a mega blowout would occur while the power plant was in operation.

Both reactors returned online last year after the Japanese nuclear safety authority declared that they were meeting the requirements introduced as a result of the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. The plant's No. 1 and No. 2 reactors are offline and should be scrapped.
