A Koforidua Magistrates’ Court has taken into custody a 36-year-old woman who, along with her son, allegedly killed her husband in Asamanketewa near Nkurakan in the eastern region.
The court chaired by his honor, Eric Danning, however granted a bond of 10,000 GH ¢ with two sureties to his 15-year-old son.
It was after his lawyer argued that he was a minor and had no connection to the crime.
He added that he only saved his mother who was under attack.
At the court hearing on Wednesday, September 1, the judge denied a bail request for Mavis, the prime suspect when prosecutor Chief Inspector Hayford Osei urged the court to send her back until that the police have completed their investigations while pursuing other suspects who are currently at large.
Presenting the facts of the case to the court, Chief Inspector Hayford Osei said the complainant was Seth Adjei Boadu, 25, a driver residing in Haatso in Accra.
According to him, the late Eric Amoako, 52, and his wife, Mavis Amponsah, had been married for 17 years and had five children, all living in Asamanketewa, a farming community near Nkurakan in the municipality of Yilo Krobo in the region of L ‘East.
He said that on August 28, at around 9:30 p.m., the deceased allegedly accused the wife of infidelity resulting in an exchange of comments that escalated into a brawl.
Their 15-year-old son, the prosecutor said, joined the mother in the fight against the father.
The police prosecutor said that Mavis subsequently called his brother Kofi Dennis who arrived with two other accomplices from Dawu-Akuapem near Adukrom and subjected the deceased to severe beatings and allegedly hit his head with a pestle.
He explained that the deceased suffered a deep cut on the back of his head.
He said he lost consciousness and was rushed to the East Koforidua Regional Hospital by Kofi Dennis and his fleeing accomplices.
Mr Osei said he was pronounced dead within hours of being admitted.
The suspects will reappear on September 16.
Meanwhile, the defense attorney has hinted that a formal bail application is underway for Mavis who is breastfeeding a one-and-a-half-year-old baby.
