Court Sends National Service Personnel for Fraud on GCB Clients

A 29-year-old national service staff member carrying out his compulsory national service at GCB Bank's Asante Mampong branch was detained by the Nsuta Circuit Court for alleged fraud.

The accused, Charles Elton Nana Amoah, allegedly defrauded 77 customers on an amount of GH 50,112,650.00.

He pleaded not guilty to the three counts of theft, fraud, false pretenses and falsification of documents, and will appear again in court on April 25 of this year.

Chief Inspector of the Police, James Obeng, told the Court presided over by Ms. Lydia Osei Marfo that the Applicant was the director of the Asante Mampong GCB branch, while the accused was a member of the National Service attached to the bank unit badist customers who wish to open new accounts.

He added that the accused then took advantage of his schedule and at different times and dates to steal the said amounts belonging to the customers.

According to the Prosecution, the crime was discovered when a customer reported to the bank that he was withdrawing an amount of 1 900 GH out of 3 000 GH, which she had deposited in her accounts .

Mr. Obeng stated that the client became worried when she was told that her savings account did not contain any money. Subsequently, she reported the case to the director.

He added that the suspect, who was not going to work that day, had been contacted by the director and that, sensing the danger, the accused had reacted, had quickly sent 1,900 GH to the client via his mobile money wallet.

Chief Inspector Obeng said the director had become suspicious and had decided to consult the value books managed by the accused and had found the fraud.

He added that the accused was then arrested and handed over to the police. After investigation, he was charged and prosecuted.
