There is a stern warning from the country’s national case management coordinator for severe and critical cases of covid-19, Dr Christian Owoo, that critical cases in Ghana are increasing at an alarming rate.

Speaking to Nortey Duah on Joy News’ Ultimate health On Sunday, he noted that the system will be overwhelmed by the current trajectory and that things will get worse.

Ghana’s intensive care unit (ICU) beds have been reported to be full, although Ghana’s Director General of Health Services, Dr Patrick Kumah-Aboagye, has questioned this information.

Dr Christian Owoo told show host Nortey Dua that the system may soon be overwhelmed.

“I can tell you that about two weeks ago the few numbers we had almost last week started to double in a matter of days. But we know the trajectory on which we are; it is not sustainable if he continues on this trajectory, no matter how much we try to water down things because in the long term, the system will be overwhelmed not only in terms of human resources but even of material resources ”, a- he noted.

Dr Christian Owoo was quick to add, however, that although the number of intensive care units is doubling, that does not necessarily mean that there is no capacity to take care of such patients.

This is a position that has been affirmed by virologist and the Kumasi Center for Collaborative Research Dr Michael Owusu, who warns that if urgent action is not taken by the government and ordinary people to enforce protocols, more cases and deaths will be recorded. .

Dr Michael Owusu said: “Once we know we have a new strain in the system then as this virus does it should go through a third wave which should be a third wave which will reach the highest peak before it does. ‘it’s not happening and it looks like that’s what started and there’s no doubt we’re in a full third wave.

He continued that “if action is not taken by the people involved, by human behavior and also by the government, we should expect a rapid increase in cases, both active cases, new cases and new cases. possible deaths if we do nothing against this. “

Some fear that compliance with the preventive Covid-19 protocols instituted by the government to curb or limit the spread of the virus will be completely abandoned, with a reduction in the wearing of masks and events likely to spread the virus in full swing across the country .
