Covid-19 has become a whip for your reckless economic management – Mahama in government

Former President John Dramani Mahama said the country is currently going through an economic crisis.

A crisis, he believes, cannot be blamed on the covid-19 pandemic but rather on what he calls “reckless economic management” overseen by the NPP government since 2017.

Mahama joined the NDC Professionals Forum series of lectures on Monday on “The State of Ghana’s Economy – The Scorecard”. The talk was given by former Minister of Finance Seth Terkper.

Mr. Terkper during his presentation argued that the NDC administration has left a stable economy with multiple income streams and not a shabby economy.

Mr. Mahama who addressed the assembly after Mr. Terkper launched a scathing attack on the management of the economy by governments. He insisted the government is now relying on covid-19 which he says is the whipped boy blamed for the current state of the economy. He insisted that just as covid-19 seriously treats people with underlying illnesses, its impact has been devastating due to economic mismanagement.

He added that Ghana’s debt had reached unsustainable levels, forcing the government to use tax revenues to pay off debts. The government, he said, had overlooked calls from people like himself to hold a forum to seek other views on how to save the economy from collapse.

Mr Mahama alleged that the nation is currently experiencing unprecedented levels of corruption, a situation that can only be addressed if this government is defeated to allow another to hold the appointees accountable.
