COVID-19: June timeline for the arrival of vaccines too far

– According to President Nana Akufo-Addo, more than 17 million doses of vaccine are expected in the country by June

– This comes as active cases in the country continue to rise

– The administration aims to vaccinate the entire population, with an initial target of twenty million people

Haruna Iddrisu, the leader of the minority group in parliament, urged President Nana Akufo-Addo to speed up efforts to obtain COVID-19 vaccines.

Ghana is preparing to procure its first batch of COVID vaccines in the first half of this year, President Akufo-Addo said.

Since then, a lot of work has been done to achieve this.

The administration aims to vaccinate the entire population, with an initial target of twenty million people.

At the end of June, 17.6 million doses of the vaccine had reportedly been purchased for the people of Ghana, Akufo-Addo noted.

Tamale South lawmaker, however, said the June schedule for vaccine procurement was “too far away.”

“Personally, I think June is too far away. Ghana should double our steps and the president must provide the necessary leadership, ”Iddrisu said on Sunday January 31, 2021.

He further advised the president to move beyond the rhetoric of the Sunday broadcasts and that what Ghanaians want to hear is when the vaccine arrives.

Meanwhile, at least five nurses and midwives have died of complications from COVID-19 since the outbreak in the country.

Ghana recorded its first case of the virus on March 12, 2020, of two people who arrived in the country – a Ghanaian and a Norwegian national.

More than 800 nurses and midwives have also tested positive for the virus, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) said.

“I can confirm that we have lost two midwives and three nurses,” GRNMA secretary general David Tenkorang-Twum said on Monday February 1, 2021.

Speaking in an interview with an Accra-based company Starr FM watched by YEN.com.gh, Tenkorang-Twum added, “In August of last year 840 of our people were infected but recovered and returned to work. It is becoming overwhelming.

Ghana has seen an astronomical increase in the number of cases since the beginning of January. The active cases amount to 5,358.

To date, 416 people have died from the deadly contagion with 170 and 44 people respectively in severe and critical conditions.
