The Ghana Nurses and Midwives Association said four of its members had died from COVID-19.

This was revealed in a press release published by the association and co-signed by its president, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo and its general secretary, David Tekorang-Twum, on Tuesday January 19, 2020.

The GRNMA revealed that: “At the height of the first wave in July 2020, eight hundred and forty (840) nurses and midwives had been infected and two deaths had been recorded. The death toll now stands at four (4) with the recent disappearance of Mr. Solomon Nsor, a senior nurse who worked at the War Memorial Hospital in Kasena Nankana Municipality in the Upper East region.

The association further revealed that a good number of nurses have been infected with the virus now.

“A number of staff currently infected with the virus are nurses and midwives and there is therefore a need to test all hospital staff and put in place appropriate measures to quarantine and treat them. infected people. Contact tracing should also be initiated to identify those infected for treatment, ”the statement said.

GRNMA also called on the government to “urgently increase the stock of PPE to be distributed in establishments at all levels in order to improve the safety of health professionals”.

Regarding the payment of the COVID-19 insurance premium as part of the incentive for frontline workers by the government, GRNMA urged the government to ensure that the payment is expedited.

“The payment of the insurance premium for those who have been infected with the virus, those who fell seriously ill and those who died in the first wave should be accelerated to serve as a motivation for those fighting the pandemic on the field, “the statement added. .
