Traders in parts of Accra continue to disobey Covid-19 safety protocols despite directives from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to strictly adhere to protocols to contain the spread of the virus.
Traders, mostly in the central business district, were sitting nearby and lacking nasal masks when the Ghanaian news agency visited the market on Monday.
A few traders, who had their nasal masks under their chin, told GNA that they had difficulty breathing with the masks, “so we would take them off every now and then to breathe in fresh air.”
Hand washing stations were also completely out of sight. However, a few people who purchased food and other products were seen with nasal masks.
A trader, Nana Pomaa, who had her sister and three children with her, said: “Since most of the traders in the market do not have nasal masks, I make sure that my children and I wear ours. not contract the virus ”.
A sunglasses dealer, Kwame Asiedu, who was wearing his mask, asked security personnel to enforce protocols at markets and stations.
In update number 22, measures taken against the spread of Covid-19, President Akufo-Addo, ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh, to ensure the strict application of the law on wearing masks, in all public places, including markets and on public transport.
He said stiff penalties existed for those who broke the law on compulsory masks, saying: “If someone is arrested by security agencies without following this directive, that person will be treated strictly in accordance with the law.
The president lamented that “the number of serious cases, which was 18 a week ago, has increased to 120 and 33 critical cases in treatment centers.”
He said the number of confirmed deaths had risen from 338 to 352 within two weeks and called on citizens to live with the virus responsibly and observe safety protocols.
