Cristiano Ronaldo has been fined € 20,000 (£ 17,700) by UEFA after celebrating his goal in Juventus' Champions League win over Atletico Madrid, announced the governing body.

During the match of March 12, the Portuguese international was seen signaling to the fans – imitating Diego Simeone in the first leg, after which the director of Atletico was sentenced to a fine of 17 £ 000 for an "obscene" celebration.

He came after Ronaldo converted a late penalty for his hat trick and a 3-0 win that allowed the Serie A team to qualify for the quarter-finals. Ronaldo escaped suspension when UEFA announced the decision of its body of control, ethics and discipline in a brief statement Thursday afternoon.

The attacker faced a charge of improper conduct within the meaning of Art. 11 (2) (b) and art. 11 (2) (d) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations. The UEFA statement stated: "The CEDB has decided to inflict 20,000 euros (£ 17,700) on the Juventus player Cristiano Ronaldo for his improper conduct".

Ronaldo will now be free to play next month's quarterfinal match against Dutch club Ajax.
