Two suspected motorcycle thieves were burned to death on Sunday morning by crowds at two separate locations in Makurdi, the capital of Benue state.
Vanguard learned that suspects attempted to wrest the motorcycles from two commercial motorcyclists, also known as Okada, at gunpoint in the town’s Wurukum and Gyado villa neighborhoods when their victims took sounded the alarm which drew the crowds.
According to an eyewitness to the Wurukum incident who spoke on condition of anonymity, a middle-aged man reported an Okada horseman in front of the popular Suswam Thank You elementary school at around 6:30 a.m. pretending to head towards the Wurukum roundabout.
“When the Okada rider stopped, he pulled a gun at the rider and asked him to get off and hand the bike back to him.
“The horseman engaged him in an argument and quickly sounded the alarm which drew the attention of the locals who rushed to the scene, grabbed him and set him on fire after shooting him. beaten to death, ”he added.
Meanwhile, a similar scenario also unfolded in the city’s Gyado Villa area, near Benue State University Hospital, BSUTH, Makurdi, around 7 a.m., where a horse rider from Okada was also reported by another young man who pulled out a gun and asked him to return his Honda motorcycle.
According to the eyewitness, “he was however overpowered by his victim who, with the help of young people from the region, tied him up and set him on fire.”
When contacted, the police public relations officer, DSP deputy superintendent Catherine Anene, who confirmed the Wurukum incident, however, frowned at the use of jungle juice by people. warning that anyone was wrong to take the laws into their hands.
