Crystal Palace vs. Tottenham: Andros Townsend Defends Celebration of Goals – "It's What's Called Respect"

Andros Townsend reacted to criticism of Crystal Palace's win over Tottenham in the Crystal Cup win over Tottenham, saying his lack of reaction on the pitch was due to his respect for his football education with the Spurs.

In Sunday's fourth round FA Cup game at Selhurst Park, Palace played 1-0 against Connor Wickham, who scored his first goal in 799 days returning from his injury.

After the Wickham goal in the ninth minute, Palace was given a penalty for Kyle Walker-Peters after 34 minutes.

This gave Townsend the opportunity to score his first goal against the team that he had left in January 2016. He sent his efforts to the center of the field when Gazzaniga dipped to the left.

Winger Townsend was restricted during his celebrations against one of his former clubs and told BT Sport 2 after the match: "I probably would not be here today without the Spurs, so it would be disrespectful on the part of celebrating against them.

"I took some penalties for the Spurs, so I knew they were going to tell the goaltender to go to the other side, so I inserted it and helped calm the nerves a bit.

"We got the deserved clean sheet at the end, hopefully that will give us confidence and we will have to see who we will be next round."

During the game, Paul Latham (@ PaulLay10), a Twitter user, tweeted in Townsend: "@andros_townsend's career @SpursOfficial – has been played 50 times in 7 years (the last time 3 years ago). for @CPFC He did not celebrate, talk about yourself. "

However, Townsend responded to the tweet Sunday night by writing: "Try 93 games and stay there for 16 years from 8 years to 24 years … it's a little respect for the club that made me my companion".
