OTTAWA, October 8 (Reuters) – The latest wave of COVID-19 in Canada could decline in the coming weeks with an increasing number of Canadians now vaccinated against the coronavirus, a senior medical official said on Friday, citing longer forecasts term.
Theresa Tam, the chief public health officer, told reporters the transmission rate across Canada is now less than 1, saying the current outbreak has “abandoned a pattern of nationwide growth.”
One of the reasons for this decline is the increasing number of people vaccinated. As of October 4, nearly 81% of Canadians over the age of 12 were fully immunized.
“Longer-term forecasts suggest that at current levels of transmission, the fourth wave may decline in the coming weeks,” Tam said.
Official data shows that 28,141 Canadians have died since the start of the pandemic last year.
