A hundred people are reported missing in Zimbabwe following a cyclone that killed at least 24 people.
The tropical cyclone Idai has wreaked havoc in eastern Zimbabwe after first hitting its neighbor, Mozambique – where it killed at least 19 people and left half a million people in Beira 39, one of the largest cities in the world.
Joshua Sacco, a member of Zimbabwe's Chimanimani district, told AFP that most of the victims were from Chimanimani East.
"According to the information we have to date, more than 100 people are missing and some of them may have died," Sacco said. "At least 25 houses were swept by a landslide in the suburb of Ngangu, in the town of Chimanimani, there were people inside, they are part of the disappeared."
Meanwhile, a spokesman for Zimbabwean opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change, Jacob Mafume, said on his website that a "serious humanitarian crisis" was taking place in the districts of the country. Hundreds of thousands of people have been affected in Zimbabwe and Mozambique, with numerous power cuts and roads and bridges affected by floods.
