Cyclone Idai: flying over flooded Mozambique

While Mozambique is counting the cost of Cyclone Idai, Africa's BBC chief editor, Fergal Keane, has joined a helicopter flight over the most affected areas.

The pilot headed east through the brown water expanse. "We are 15 miles from the sea," he said, "but we feel we are above the sea". He was right. Below us, farmland that housed thousands of people had disappeared.

Charities claim that thousands of people are stranded by catastrophic floods, clinging to a roof or stuck in trees.

The death of about 300 people is confirmed in Mozambique and Zimbabwe, but the balance is expected to increase.
