Cyril, South African President, Ramaphosa, Responds to Corruption

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said he was organizing a lawsuit against an official report concluding that he had deliberately misled parliament by making a campaign donation.

He added that the report of the monitoring group of corruption in the country was "fundamentally and irremediably defective".

S addressing reporters, he also said that it was appropriate for the courts to make an impartial judgment on the matter.

Ramaphosa's supporters said the allegations were politically motivated.

The report of Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane was released Friday. In addition to accusing President Ramaphosa of misleading Parliament, he suggested that he had potentially committed a money laundering offense.

The charges against President Ramaphosa are seen by many as a battle for control of the ANC and South Africa. Party factions are more entrenched since President Jacob Zuma, 77, was forced to resign in February 2018, while denying numerous allegations of corruption.

He was replaced by his then deputy, Ramaphosa, who promised to fight corruption and called Mr. Zuma's nine-year term "wasted".

Mkhwebane's critics say she has become a participant in the response of former president Zuma's allies.

The fighting is likely to take place in South African courts, which have remained largely independent.
