A father who claims to have accidentally let his one year old twins die in a hot car while he was on his way to work was put on hold in a criminal case.
Juan Rodriguez appeared Thursday in court, charged with homicide and manslaughter by criminal negligence.
The court learned how the father had left his children in the car while he was working at James J. Peters V.A. Medical Center in the Bronx, New York.
The 39-year-old father told the police that he had arrived at work in the Bronx at 8 am, had worked as a team and had already started driving home at 4 pm.
He then discovered the twins, Luna and Phoenix, still tied to their car seats.
When he realized that neither one nor the other of the babies was breathing, the court learned how Rodriguez got out of the car and shouted, "I hid myself. I killed my babies, "according to the criminal complaint.
A medical examiner found that babies' body temperature was 108 ° C at the time of their death.
The prosecutor decided to suspend the case before a grand jury, while new investigations were under way.

The distraught father told the police that he had taken his 4-year-old son to his daycare, but then forgot to drop the twins.
The criminal case is still pending but the prosecution has been suspended.
Rodriguez, who served in the National Guard for 22 years, pleaded not guilty to the charges, saying he had not acted intentionally.
His lawyer, Joey Jackson, said, "Our appearance was to determine whether the grand jury had proceeded or not.
"As you know, in New York, a grand jury consists of 23 members, of whom 16 constitute a quorum and 12 of whom must vote by indictment.
"To date, there has been no grand jury action," said Rodriguez's lawyer, Joey Jackson.
"We are talking to the district attorney's office to convey to them what I think they know and understand: that it was a horrible and terrible tragedy."
His wife, Marissa Rodriguez, said in a statement that she was supporting her husband and that the death of their twins was an accident.
Ms. Rodriguez said: "Even though I hurt more than I would have ever thought possible, I still love my husband.
"He is a good person and a great father and I know that he would never have done anything wrong to our children intentionally.
"I will never be able to overcome this loss and I know that he will never forgive himself for this mistake."
Rodriguez will appear in court on August 27.
