Daimler denied having removed the emission control software from a range of Mercedes GLK 220 CDI diesel models, highlighting the legal difficulties of the German automotive industry regarding the handling of exhaust gases since Volkswagen was surprised by using illegal devices in 2015.
The German newspaper "Bild" reported yesterday that the KBA, the German Federal Highway Transport Authority, had detected a software function in the OM 651 engine of the compact SUV in the autumn of 2018 and that the suspicions of cheating computers were then confirmed. The feature was quietly removed during software updates, the paper said.
In denying the report, Daimler said he was working with the authorities during a formal hearing opened by the KBA in April. The audience concerns GLKs produced between June 2012 and June 2015, he said. According to Bild, 60,000 vehicles could be affected.
"We are cooperating fully with the Federal Motor Transport Authority and looking at the facts," Daimler said in a statement. "The allegation that we wanted to hide something with the voluntary service measure is incorrect."
Daimler said the automaker was adhering to the approval process agreed with the Ministry of Transportation and KBA to implement voluntary service measures, which include software updates, for more than three million Mercedes vehicles -Benz affected. In January, a Stuttgart court issued a document seeking to certify the action of a mbad investor on claims that Daimler informed the markets too late about its use of defeat devices in diesel vehicles .
