• COP George Akuffo Dampare will officially begin his duties as Chief of Police of Ghana on August 1

• His appointment was greeted by most security sector observers

• Professor Kwesi Aning from KAIPTC says he will definitely need two peers to be successful in the role

Police Commissioner George Akuffo Dampare would need the support of all police departments and all Ghanaians in general to be successful in the role he will assume on August 1.

The July 21 announcement by the Presidency of his acting appointment was seen as fully deserved for a man who has been a career policeman rising through the ranks to the top of the Ghana Police Service ladder.

Professor Kwesi Aning from the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center, KAIPTC, last Thursday (July 22) told Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana show how the new police chief can be successful in his role .

Aning specifically cited the importance two fellow police commissioners will play if Dampare is to prosper and stand out as an inspector general of police.

“Dampare’s strength is his strategic vision and empathy for his staff but also a willingness when operational plans have been developed and that is why it is essential to have Yohunu and Kofi Boakye by his side,” said Aning.

He explained further: “They are operational people, Commander 1 like Kofi Boakye is known in the Ashanti region…. “

According to the organizational chart of the Ghana Police Service, the COPs belong to the Police Management Board which is headed by the IGP with officers responsible for managing the day-to-day administration of the service.

COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu is currently the Managing Director for Special Tasks, while Nathan Kofi Boakye is the Managing Director for Legal Affairs and Prosecutions.

Incoming IGP George Akuffo Dampare was CEO in charge of administration at the time he was announced as acting IGP.

Overall, there are 17 COPs in the Police Management Board.
