- A video of Jake Gyllenhaal correcting "Velvet Buzzsaw", director Dan Gilroy's pronunciation of "melancholy" became viral at the beginning of this week.
- Gilroy told INSIDER that it was actually a joke about the movie "Megamind".
- "Will Farrell imagined this great thing in the movie where he mispronounced words, including" melancholy, "said Gilroy.
- Gilroy said he and Gyllenhaal had "probably sent 30 text messages ceaselessly laughing" in recent days, when they realized that the moment had been picked up by the media.
The director of "Velvet Buzzsaw", Dan Gilroy, sets the record straight on the viral video of Jake Gyllenhaal's impatient correction of how he pronounces the word melancholy. It turned out to be a reference to an inner joke in the 2010 animated film "Megamind".
"I have to thank Will Ferrell and" Megamind ", a movie that I really like," Gilroy told INSIDER on a phone call Friday afternoon.
Gilroy was found in the spotlight at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, thanks to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter with the cast of "Velvet Buzzsaw". While he was talking about the other star of the film, Renee Russo, Gilroy used the word melancholy, pronouncing it as follows: "Mell-AHN-Coly".
"It's melancholy, Dan," said Gyllenhaal in an impbadive voice. He then raises his eyebrows, looking slightly annoyed. "C & # 39; do not the first time today. "
When he spoke to INSIDER, Gilroy laughed at the memory and explained how he was referring to the main character of "Megamind", voiced by Will Ferrell.
"Will Farrell imagined this great thing in the movie where he mispronounced words, including" melancholy, "said Gilroy." And he also makes a bad pronunciation of Metro City and calls it "metocity" [rhyming with ferocity]. "
Gilroy says that he was talking about "Megamind" in Gyllenhaal a few minutes before the filmed interview of The Hollywood Reporter.
"I was joking with Jake and I started saying" melancholy "and Jake was dying [laughing], "Gilroy said." Then the camera begins to roll, and I throw "melancholy" as a joke to Jake and he – in all seriousness, corrects me. "
The moment has been noticed on Twitter, especially by the Vulture Associate Editor, Hunter Harris (whose tweet on the video has more than 21,000 favorites).
"To be honest, I have no problem with [people] thinking that I did not know how to pronounce the word melancholy, "said Gilroy. And also, he says strangely, "This is not the first time today …" like what does it mean? That I have mispronounced the word all day? We died. "
Gilroy says that he and Gyllenhaal have "probably sent 30 text messages incessantly laughing" when they realized that the moment had been picked up by the media.
"Velvet Buzzsaw" is currently streamed on Netflix. Read the review of the film by INSIDER here.
