Canelo Alvarez, the biggest fighter in the world today, will face a big opponent of Daniel Jacobs on a major map that will be broadcast live on the DAZN streaming service this weekend in Cinco De Mayo. Canelo-Jacobs, which perfectly matches the bill for a Pay Per View fight, will be seen for free by DAZN subscribers. All of this is part of a three-contract Brooklyn Jacobs deal signed with DAZN and promoter Eddie Hearn.
"This is the opportunity I was waiting for," says Jacobs. "The opportunity to achieve greatness in the ring, I always thought I could beat Canelo, and May 4 live on DAZN, I will have the chance to play. It's been almost four years since Canelo faced an American challenger. It will be a huge event where I think I will pose as the best middleweight in the division. "
Jacobs, who led an impressive battle against Gennady Golovkin in March 2017, will enter the biggest fight of his career. Although many had the impression that Jacobs had won the fight against Golovkin, Golovkin won a controversial victory. Golovkin then fought Canelo twice, once by draw and once by defeat, in a controversial manner. With a third fight between Canelo-GGG and apparently not happening (at least for the moment), a very interesting match is coming between Canelo and Jacobs.
For the Canelo-Jacobs match, it will be essentially the choice of the best fighter in the middleweight division. Three of the four main belts are at stake, as well as the Ring Magazine linear championship. Although the location of the match has not yet been announced, Las Vegas might seem like a sure thing, with New York and Dallas also in the running. "What a fight!" Says Hearn, Jacob's promoter. "I can not tell you how pleased I am that Danny Jacobs has this opportunity to fight Canelo on Cinco de Mayo in a mbadive unification fight."
Although Canelo-Jacobs is a high-level match by everyone's standards, the fact that this is the first truly major game broadcast on DAZN makes the couple particularly intriguing. "On any other network or platform, Canelo vs. Jacobs would be an expensive pay-per-view," said Joseph Markowski, senior vice president of DAZN North America. "At DAZN, we believe the best fights should be available to our subscribers at no additional cost."
Jacobs has remained busy since the fight against Golovkin, winning the IBF middleweight title by beating Sergiy Derevyanchenko last fall. Canelo, meanwhile, won the WBC and WBA titles with his victory over Golovkin in September. The WBO middleweight strap is owned by Demetrius Andrade, who will play Artur Akavov this Friday in New York in a match that will be broadcast live on DAZN. One of the reasons why Jacobs' signature on DAZN is so important is that now all the big titles in the middleweight division are competing for the streaming service. This means that a battle for all the major belts and titles could very well happen in the near future.
The missing piece to all this is, of course, Golovkin, who did not announce what he was going to do now that HBO, which has regularly staged its fights, is out of the boxing field.
